Dudley R. Herschbach shared the 1986 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Yaun T. Lee and John C. Polanyi.
They conducted research at Harvard University on the dynamics of chenmical reactions.
By shooting beams of high energy at molecules they were able to gain a better understanding of molecules in an oscillating electromagnetic field.
They earned the Nobel Prize for their contributions.
Herschbach was born and raised in San Jose, California, where as a child and teen, he was active in Boy Scouts and sports.
He went to Stanford University with both academic and athletic scholarships.
He received his BS in 1954 in mathematics and continued to get his MA in Chemistry.
